Maya Vision Serpent III
HISTORY:  More than anything else, the vision serpent is a connection between the realms of life and death.  The most common ritual associated with the vision serpent is the invoking of the spirits of ancestors.  Coronation rites, in particular--like the one portrayed in the bas relief tablet from the Temple of the Sun depicting the ascension of Chan Bahlam to the throne on the death of his father, Pacal the Great--were occasions for contacting ancestral spirits for wisdom and guidance.   It was the vision serpent who served as the medium for contacting the departed ancestors and spirits.
