Sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun
The much larger original of this golden box was the outer coffin of King Tutankhamun, which held three inner coffins, the innermost of which contained his mummy. Our cultured marble reproduction has been scaled down to the perfect size to sit on a table or hall console--8.5" long, 8" tall, and 8" deep. The original, circa 1347-1237 BC (Eqyptian Dynasty XVIII), now resides in the Egyptian Museum of Cairo.

This scaled-down reproduction is based upon the larger, outer golden sarcophagus of King Tutankhamun. This outer vessel held his three inner coffins, one nested inside the other. The decoration of this sarcophagus is dominated by the four guardian goddesses carved in high relief at each corner of the sarcophagus. The four graceful godesses are depicted in a protection pose with wings outspread and arms circling the sarcophagus as if protecting the body of the king. They are Selket, Isis, Nepthys and Neith--the same guardian goddesses whose golden statue images surrounded the canopic jars containing the internal organs of the king. The sarcophagus is also carved with hieroglyph texts of magical spells to protect the king in the afterlife.
