Standing Statues of Egyptian God, Khnum

MYTHOLOGY:  Khnum is a very ancient Egyptian deity represented with a ram's head. As a water god, he was closely associated with the annual flooding of the Nile.  And since the flood left behind silt and clay, Egyptian mythology credited him with creating human children out of the clay on a potter's wheel, then placing them in their mother's wombs.

He was often pictured holding a pot, from which he poured forth the rain, and was thought to be the source of the Nile.  But as other regions of Egypt grew in prominence, their mythology which characterized the Nile, itself, as a god called Hapy took precedence, and Khnum was relegated completely to his role as potter/creator of man and the other gods. As the potter/creator of other gods, he came to be identified with the Ba of Ra or Ram, and thought of as having a ram's head, an image also associated with Amun-Ra.
