The Celts were the ancient inhabitants of much of Europe.  A spiritual people, they later merged their rich mythology with the Christian faith they embraced, creating a distinctive art seen especially in Ireland and Scotland.  Celtic crosses began to appear in the 5th Century A.D., with a distinctive shape derived from a pagan sunwheel--originally a cross surrounded by a circle with a center stone representing the sun and mock suns at the four quarters. The central sun came to represent their Christian God.
